Clinical placement planning for MRI and ultrasound schools

Planning MRI clinical placements or ultrasound externships starts with more than a list of facilities. A useful placement plan connects your academic requirements with the experience, supervision, schedules, and communication a clinical site can support.
This guide offers a practical framework for school directors and clinical coordinators preparing a new cohort or reviewing a potential clinical partnership.
Start with the requirements your school owns
Prepare a written brief for each program. Include student numbers, intended start dates, required hours, expected competencies, assessment methods, supervision needs, and the regions students can reasonably attend. Note whether the cohort can be staggered across different start dates or rotation schedules.
Clinical-site approval and decisions about acceptable activities and hours remain with your school. A placement partner needs those requirements before discussing a workable rotation plan.
Review clinical capacity beyond the number of openings
A prospective facility may be interested in students while still needing to confirm its teaching capacity. Discuss the examinations performed, patient flow, operating days, equipment, supervision arrangements, and the number of students who can participate in a rotation.
For MRI, distinguish supplemental readiness activities from supervised scanner-based and patient-based learning. For ultrasound, discuss the examinations and specialties available, instructor experience, and how students will receive feedback. A site’s suitability depends on the requirements of the specific program.
Make clinical site development a defined process
If you need help developing new clinical affiliations, agree on the target region, programs, outreach responsibilities, and the information needed to assess a prospective site. Establish what counts as an introduction, a qualified prospect, and a confirmed affiliation.
A signed agreement and a ready-to-start rotation can represent different stages. Define which approvals, capacity confirmations, student clearances, and scheduling steps must be complete before students attend. Agree on reporting and escalation so your team can distinguish progress from confirmed placement capacity.
Connect preparation with the assigned training site
Readiness preparation can help students approach clinical learning with clearer safety habits, patient communication, professional expectations, and questions to ask their instructors. It should be identified separately from the clinical activities your school accepts for credit.
MIG Healthcare is based at Symphony Towers in San Diego for readiness preparation and school coordination. No MRI scanner is located at Symphony Towers. Patient-based clinical experience takes place at clinical training sites, including our imaging center where school approval and applicable supervision requirements are met.
Agree on communication and progress documentation
Decide who communicates schedule changes, follows attendance exceptions, gathers evaluations, and raises concerns. Clarify how competency observations are documented and how your faculty will review progress. If your school already uses a tracking system, discuss the working process before assuming an integration or a replacement.
Useful reporting helps your team identify the next action: a missing evaluation, a schedule adjustment, a student needing support, or a future capacity gap. It should complement your school’s academic oversight.
Prepare your partnership inquiry
- School, campus, modality, and primary coordinator
- Cohort size, preferred start dates, and expected rotation duration
- Required hours, competencies, supervision, and reporting needs
- Preferred locations and scheduling flexibility
- Support needed: site development, placement coordination, readiness, affiliate management, or cohort planning
MIG Healthcare supports clinical placement partnerships for MRI and ultrasound schools, with responsibilities defined around the agreed scope. Explore our MRI clinical training pathway and ultrasound clinical training pathway, or send us your cohort details.
Capacity, site suitability, schedules, supervision, and partnership terms are confirmed with your school before commitments are made.
